As the oldest jewellery house in history, Garrard has held the unique honour of creating some of the most important jewels of all time. Among them is Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara, created by Garrard in 1893 and famously worn by Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day. Decades later, it was also chosen by Princess Beatrice for her marriage ceremony, a testament to its lasting significance. Other iconic creations include The Lover’s Knot Tiara, a pearl and diamond design made for Queen Mary and subsequently worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Wales on notable royal occasions.

What defines a real diamond tiara?
Associated with royalty and aristocracy, fine diamond tiaras are the highest status jewellery item one can ever own. The ultimate statement jewellery piece, tiaras are designed to be worn on the crown of the head, featuring an elaborate front with an ornate tip typically set completely with an astonishing array of diamonds intended to dazzle under banquet chandeliers. Typically handcrafted by master jewellers, the front setting features exquisite motifs such as floral sprays, botanical arrangements, hidden hearts, scrollwork, stars, or geometric patterns that showcase both the diamonds and artistry of the metalwork only mastered by the best jewellery houses. Which royal tiaras has Garrard created throughout history?
Garrard’s artistry is responsible for the rarest and most cherished royal tiaras and crowns in The Royal Collection. Among the tiaras created for the British Royal Family is the Oriental Circlet, designed by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria in 1853 with opals, later adjusted by Garrard to instead feature rubies, and the Lover’s Knot Tiara, a favourite of Princess Diana, regarded as one of the most romantic and recognisable jewels in the Royal Collection. We have had the honour of designing and making many tiaras for foreign royal families and aristocratic clients throughout our remarkable history as Crown Jeweller.
Can diamond tiaras be worn beyond weddings and state occasions?
Yes, Garrard tiaras are incredibly sought after for weddings but can also be worn on any special occasion such as banquets and balls. Queen Camilla and Catherine, Princess of Wales attended many State Banquets at Windsor Castle in 2025 wearing rare Garrard tiaras.
Some of the iconic Garrard tiaras chosen for Royal Weddings include the transformative Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara, worn by Queen Elizabeth II, the Poltimore Tiara worn by Princess Margaret on her wedding day which was famously photographed by her husband Lord Snowdon while in the bathtub at Kensington Palace in 1962, and Queen Mary's Diamond Bandeau Tiara, worn by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
How are Garrard’s diamond tiaras crafted?
Like all of our jewellery, Garrard employ both traditional skills and modern techniques to craft jewellery pieces to the highest possible quality. Thousands of hours are spent in the workshop meticulously polishing, finessing, and arranging diamonds into spectacular designs sketched by our in-house creative team led by Garrard’s Creative Director Sara Prentice.
Are Garrard’s tiaras available for hire as well as purchase?
Yes, Garrard tiaras are available for hire through the Something Borrowed rental service. Bespoke tiaras are also available through our bespoke high jewellery service.
